  1. Don't write over-the-top characters.

  2. Use settings you see in everyday life.

  3. Your settings can be drawn from places in your life.

  4. Identify conflicts that arise in everyday life and use that as a driving force for your plot.

  5. Watch how people interact with each other and use that information to create realistic character interactions.

  6. Look at the people around you or in society and use them as inspiration for your characters.

  7. Observe how people talk in everyday life.

  8. Incorporate conflict and disagreements into dialogue.

  9. Outrageous scenarios can be used within the story; however, make sure they are not so far-fetched that they are impossible - crazy things do happen in real life.

  10. Use what you know about reality and incorporate that into your story.
